Alvin Garrett - 2022 Commencement Speaker

Not only is Alvin Garrett an accomplished musician, vocalist, and Grammy-Nominated song

writer, he is a successful business owner, master strategist, and a voice of inspiration through his music and community service. This Alabama-born-and-raised preacher’s son has woven over twenty years of diverse experience in the entertainment industry with the common thread of hope and inspiration. Garrett’s personal and professional motto states, “Because of HOPE, I have the INSPIRATION to pursue what I LOVE at the risk of LOSS…You can’t get on The HILL if you’re afraid to take an L.”

In addition to a Grammy nomination, Garrett has won a Soul Train Award, a Dove Award, and a Stellar Award for songs written for various artists such as Joe, Kelly Rowland, Fantasia, Deitrick Haddon, Trin-I-Tee 5:7, and many more.

Many people liken Garrett’s voice and songs to those of soul music legends, Sam Cooke and Al Green. This honorable comparison began in 2015 after the release of his soul-riveting song, “By Myself,” which made waves on multiple radio platforms. In that same year, Garrett’s love for entertainment, education, and empowerment led to the development of an innovative songwriting therapy program called, The Write Life, teaching the power of words with intent.

Alvin Garrett now serves as the Executive Vice President at The Dannon Project, which is one of the nation’s leading reentry and training-to-work agencies serving multiple at-risk populations. The Dannon Project is based in Birmingham, AL serving multiple communities in several states. Silently behind the music and charitable work, Alvin Garrett serves as a master strategist offering innovative solutions as a consultant to businesses, politicians, and other performing artists. Garrett is also an honors graduate of Samford University where he earned a B.S. in Business Management and Administration.
